With the end of another MLS season, spectators can look back at the highest highs and lowest lows of this past year. The most improved team of the year has to be the Philadelphia Union. They went from placing 14th in 2010 as the newest expansion team, to taking 3rd in the Eastern Conference. The worst performing team of the year was easily the New York Red Bulls. They had some of the most expensive players, and yet floundered throughout most of the season. Continue Reading

Anyone who listens to Rex Ryan talk during the week would think that the Jets are the best team in the league and have won multiple championships during his tenure as head coach of the Jets. He consistently talks his team up to the press and media. It is certainly good to have confidence in your squad, but “Rexy” goes a little overboard, and if he’s not careful, he’ll go straight off the deep end. He needs to realize what the rest of the nation, minus Jets fans, has already seen: The Jets are not a championship-caliber team! Continue Reading

Peahen Soccer hasn’t had the best of luck this year. Their record, 1-11-1, doesn’t lend itself to great impressions either. Despite this, the Peahens went into last Sunday’s game against Siena with their heads held high, confident with their abilities. By the end of the first half, they were tied with Siena.Emily Fenice had scored her second goal of the year to help keep the Peahens’ hope alive. However, the second half proved much more difficult for them. Continue Reading

For many sports fans at Saint Peter’s College, the Yankees loss to the Tigers in the final ALDS game was a heart-breaker. That beingsaid, thepostseasonmoves on. The Tigers are battling the Rangers to keep their hopes alive and the Brewers are tied with the St. Louis in the National League Pennant chase. Earlier results this season have seen the demise of the Philadelphia Phillies who finished the regular season 102-60. “The last game was heart-wrenching, especially after seeing that 100 win season,” said Richard Kelly, a Saint Peter’s College student from Southern New Jersey, and avid Phillies fan
for as long as he could remember. Along with the Phillies, the post-season said good-bye to a local team, the New York Yankees. The Yankees, one of the largest powerhouses in baseball, fell to the Detroit Tigers, who have not had a play-off run since 2006. The Yankees fans instantly blamed one of their stars, Alex Rodriguez, for his less than stellar performance in theplay-offs and season. Post season baseball looks to hold more surprises in store for fans. The American League and National League Champions (the winners of series mentioned earlier) will begin the seven game World Series on Wednesday, October 19, barring any unforeseen weather delays.

At the beginning of each school year, students converge on the lawn outside of Saint Peter’s Hall for daily tournaments.

The Intramural Lawn Tournaments take place daily in the afternoons in the early weeks of September. As the crowd gathers to watch the prime athletes take the center stage, the tension rises. The participants take the field, battling not just for pride but for the much desired “Intramural Champion T-Shirt.” With that they know they can go one more day without doing laundry.
This year was no different. Volleyball, Kickball, Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, and Dodgeball players all gathered on the lawn. “The lawn series is a long-standing Saint Peter’s College tradition. We here at Intramurals take it very seriously and hope that everyone else does as well,” stated Gregory Fruehwirth, an Intramurals employee and all-star. “This year we dedicated the series to Colin Hanley, who took his witty humor and excessive sports knowledge to Texas.” Mr. Hanley was the previous manager of Intramural staff and an inspiration to all who knew him.
The events were a great success. The turn-out was from all classes and one of the largest so far. Additionally, Intramurals offers seasonal sports throughout the school year. While Softball is taking place now, one can still sign up for Women’s Volleyball, Soccer, and Floor Hockey. The Softball play-offs begin and end this week. Additional sports this semester include Flag Football. Next semester, the Intramurals invites all students and alumni to join in the 5 on 5 Basketball League and Co-ed Volleyball. Everyone is encouraged to bring their “game-faces”. For more information you can visit the Saint Peter’s website under the Student Life and Rec Center sections. Fliers are also posted throughout campus.
